Funky Wombat Textiles

It's Follow Friday!

Funky Wombat Textiles is a home furnishing company based in Australia and founded by Tamara Schneider in October 2010. The company creates contemporary, sophisticated and beautiful designs for fabrics and wallpapers for the home or commercial interior. Cushions, lampshades and tea towels are also designed and produced within this company.  All products are designed, manufactured and mostly printed in Australia. You can follow Funky Wombat Textiles on Facebook and Twitter.

Have you always wanted to design?

Yes, from as long as I can remember. In the nineties I studied fashion design at the White House Institute and discovered that as much as I like what was happening with D&G, Westwood and McQueen, it was the textile designs that I really love.

How long have you worked in the textile industry?

I have been around in the fashion and textile industry for a few years now however I set my own business Funky Wombat Textile after I returned from an Internship with Timorous Beasties in 2010.

How have you got to where you are now?

Lots of experimental creative work, persistence and knowledge of the industry helps.

What inspired you?

I get inspired by nature, especially the Australian bush, architecture, historical textiles and art.

What motivated you?

Customer satisfaction, seeing my finished designs being used in a practical way in a client's house.

Do you have a favourite design?

I am happy with most of my designs, I don't really have a favourite.

Have you got any new products lined up for your designs?

I am working on and will be printing soon some limited editions prints on paper.

Which of your designs are most popular in Australia that here (UK)?

What I've noticed so far is a lot of my export sales have been for aussie expats who have been looking for an Australia type theme for their house. Australians seem to like the same.

Do you get a lot of support from family and friends?

Yes my family have been very supportive, my partner helps me with the business side of thing, and when I was studying my parents helped me with the financial side.

Where would you like to see your company in 5 years time?

I would like to be selling in the UK through an agent, and have my own studio and shop front some where in one of the trendier streets of Melbourne.

Do you have a favourite designer?

Timorous Beasties

Is there any advice you'd like to give an up and coming designer?

Make sure you love it, don't sign anything before you've read it and don't agree to anything that's not written down. Oh, and if someone offers to teach you about spreadsheets...DO IT. After that the rest is easy.

Thank you very much for your time Tamara, I really appreciate it :)
